Appreciation: the definition
“The recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something.”
I have spent the last month using the headspace app ( well, I have used this app daily for at least a year – I love it – keeps me accountable to my meditation practice) with their appreciation focus.
I’m loving it. We speak a lot about being grateful and not so much being appreciative. They do overlap; however, with that, I do like the idea of switching it up a bit by initially putting the focus on appreciation and then looking at the person or situation with a sense of being grateful. And finally, just feeling thankful for it all.
I typically do my medication in the morning. I don’t always have an agenda or intention, I just do or better yet, be present with my 20 minutes. During the day, I think about my goal/intentions, maybe write them down and/or just visualize it. My goal/intention motto is to focus, believe, and trust.
At the end of the day and before bed, I will lay in bed thinking about at least three things I have just really appreciated that day. I try to change them and go deeper but many times espresso comes up ( yup, it really brings me joy), someone who made me smile, something my kids did or said, and my husband who works super hard. Actually, animals and nature always bring a sense of appreciation – they are always joyful ( I adore Daphne Sheldrick’s Instagram feed. I worked with her in 1990 and her passion is incredibly inspiring, Go check it out: @dswt – David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust).
My wish is for everyone to feel joy, feel daily appreciation for everything that surrounds them.
Have a brilliant, delicious and healthy Thanksgiving!
